Commemorating the loss of B-17G "June Bug", 384th Bomb Group - Sunday 21st February 2027
At 9.30am on 22nd February 1944, two B-17's of the 384th Bombardment Group, RAF Grafton Underwood and the 303rd Bomb Group, RAF Molesworth, collided at around 7,000 feet above the area that is now Stanwick Lakes.
Of the twenty crew in the two aircraft, there were just three survivors - two from the 384th Bomb Group, one from the 303rd Bomb Group.
In 2024, on the 80th anniversary of the incident, a Memorial was unveiled within the site of Stanwick Lakes overlooking the area that the 303rd BG aircraft came down on.
At 9.30am, we invite you to join members of the Museum team alongside members of the Stanwick Lakes Heritage team and volunteers, at a short service at the Memorial and to lay wreaths in honour of the crew members of both aircraft.
From 10am, the 384th Bombardment Group Museum will have a display relating to the crash and also the Museum Project and 384th Bombardment Group in general, within the Visitor Centre, for visitors to view.
It's a great opportunity to catch up with members of the Museum team to see what the year ahead holds for us. There are several beautiful walking trails within Stanwick Lakes, and a large café on site offering a full range of hot and cold drinks, hot food and snacks - so come along and make a day of your visit.
